I’m Marissa Barrera, and this space is more than just about fitness—it’s about transformation and empowerment. My journey into fitness as a teenager, inspired by two in my life who embraced exercise. For me, it wasn't just about building muscles; it was my way of pushing back against body shaming, against society's expectations, and embracing self-confidence.
I was very thin as a teenager and wanted to shape my body and become strong! My first experience with weight training was as a junior in highschool. I picked the class but people thought I accidently got placed into it because it wasn't a big thing for girls to weight train back then. After highschool, through my younger party days, and especially after giving birth to my first son at the age of 22, I found myself on the opposite end - needing to lose the extra weight.
When I became a certified personal trainer, working at an all-women's gym, I encountered life-changing moments. The most memorable was helping a client who was morbidly obese transform her life. She dedicated herself to working with me for a year, and in that year she lost nearly 100lbs. Her journey from vulnerability to vitality was a testament to the power of dedication and hard work.
Life, as it does, threw its curveballs. Dealing with losses, personal challenges, and standing up for what’s right has been a crucial part of my story. Through all this, fitness remained my anchor, providing the strength and foundation that I needed to navigate through tough times.
After taking a few years off after working as a trainer for a decade I was led back here to create Mind Your Fitness. MYF is all about empowering those who have tirelessly dedicated themselves to others— especially the busy parents, professionals, advocates. We focus on real, achievable fitness goals. It’s not just about the workouts; it’s about changing your life and being the best you possible.
We specialize in at-home workouts that cater to your busy schedules, emphasizing strength training, efficient routines, yoga, and overall wellness practices. And there’s more to come, including our upcoming youth program, to bring health and resilience to the next generation.
